Max uses K9 Advantix and it works great for him (knock on wood).
So far this year I only saw one tick on him (on his ear) and it was dead.
We live in MD as well.
Last spring the ticks seemed really bad. He was on Frontline and it was like he had nothing on. Switched to K9 Advantix and it was a huge difference.
