They are so simple to clean. You can take the newspaper out a couple times a week and replace it and the grass it able to be put in the washer as long as you put it in a pillow case. I do that once a week. As long as you do that and pick up the poo as you see it you shouldn't have any smelly issues. It is great. I love it. The best part is that the dogs like it too.
