When we brought Smokey home, he was a dark, dark gray (almost black). He was 6 months old at the time and his roots were a light silver. We cut off all his puppy hair around 1 year old and he's been very silver to the point where he's almost white since then. Just recently (at 2 years old), I've noticed his roots are darkening to a grayish-blue. These aren't like minor color changes... they are drastic. I mean, I expect it as a puppy, but he's 2 years old! Should he be changing colors this drastically?
