If he's sniffing, he's telling you. That's your cue. If you want him to go to the door & bark, you need to teach him. First teach him to bark/speak. Each time you go to the door get him to speak, the go out the door. He should catch onto that fairly quickly. It's worth a try. Good luck! But if he's attached to you he can't really go to the door to speak. Think about it, and you'll come up with an answer.
