All of mine have stood by eight weeks on their own. I still have not shaved my current litter's tips (now 12 weeks) because they all stood so nicely on their own. I think part of it is genetics. I'm glad I have never had to tape -- seems like an uncomfortable thing to have to do. But I would probably do it if I had to, to make sure they had erect ears like the yorkie standard.
