I have little advice on the crying, it does sound like he suffers greatly from separation anxiety. You need to find a way to build up his confidence so that he isn't so worried when he isn't with you. Is a doggie daycare an option a few times a week? The messing in his crate, here's a thought. My Annie B had issue with being contained in small areas like a crate or the bathroom. She'd potty and totally destroy everything. One of my roommates left her out in the house by accident one day and I came home to a happy girl and a clean house. Some of these guys just don't like to be confined to small areas, could you get an ex-pen so that he'll have a little more room during the day, or perhaps gate him off in the kitchen or bathroom?

There are a lot of YT'ers in Texas, perhaps you could arrange for some play dates and try to get him out and do some socializing and build up his confidence.
