I did see the origional Biewer website several years ago,(haven't been back in a long time, don't know if it is still there or gone or if the Biewers are still around or not?) and the Biewers did indeed raise Shih Tzus along with Yorkies! They had pics of their Shih tzus,Yorkies and origional "Biewers" on their website!!! I was considering getting one until I saw the website and saw the muzzles and longer bodies of the origional Biewer dogs. They were very shih tzuish! They did have pics on their website, of all three of the breeds that they raised !

I don't know about the origional folks who "wrote" the standards, but I imagine that it was a little bit of all of that, people who needed a dog for a job and bred for it,(breeder), people who liked and wanted a dog for that job went to the breeder to get one.(Farmer, hunter, customer ) Some folks may have been influenced by looks and others wanted the dog for the value of the job they did and didn't care what they looked like.

People who liked their dogs got together with other folks with the same fondness for their same breed and I imagine it was those folks, the breeders, perhaps some monied owners who got together and hammered out a standard of some kind according to what they liked and what they needed. The Yorky standard had to have been first made over in Britain as that is where they came from. Not the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America,(YTCA). I think the AKC started before the UKC but Britain has had dog breed clubs for almost as long as they have been breeding dogs there. Here in America, the standards for the AKC parent clubs are not always the same as for the UKC parent clubs even though the breed may have origionated in Great Britain. I haven't looked at the UKC nor CKC parent Yorky clubs to see what differences if any, exist.

I do know that many foreign countries have banned tail docking and I have heard that a bill in NY has been introduced or is going to be introduced to make it illegal to dock any dog tails there. There is big worry amoung those folks who have breeds whose tails are docked and ears surgically changed, that they may not be able to show their dogs at the big shows there if they can't conform to their breed standards in this manner. So in this case the law of the land, may trump the breed standard!
