I was reading this and thought about Muffin. She was never independent in her life and always wanted to be with me no matter where I went and you know, too, that as they get older they require as much or more attention than when they were puppies.
I agree that a kitten would be the way to go for this individual, though. They don't want you to bother them. They are independent, too.
