I did a ton of research on them after my husband came home with bites because, as you can imagine, I was pretty terrified that he had brought them home. That is how you usually get them in your house and from what I've read, they are really hard to get rid of. The important points I read were never put anything on the floor/bed/upholstered furniture at a hotel. I would have never put anything on a hotel bedspread or the floor and I use the luggage racks for suitcases but I'm sure I've put bags on a chair or something. Now I will hang any smaller bags from coat hangers in the closet. From what I read, they were pretty much eradicated from the US for a long time but have now been reintroduced and the pesticide most effective at eliminating them has been banned.

BTW, my husband got the bedbug bites in Minnesota.

eta: The scariest thing I read about them is that they can go up to 14 days between "feedings" so you won't always get bitten every night. It was at least 3 weeks before I relaxed and knew he hadn't brought any home.
