I definitely recommend it! Better safe than sorry. We also put them in without the vest so that way they will not panic (hopefully) if they should go in without it on. They do well without it too but they get tired and do start to sink so watch for that. I got the orange vest at Petco and the lime one at Petsmart. Of course now Petsmart has a cute pink and white one!
