No, you didn't do a thing wrong.
If the underlying cause is a shunt (and it may not be), that is genetic and your breeder should be brought into this. Do they bile acids test their adult dogs before breeding? Are their lines clear of liver shunt and microvascular dysplasia? Do you have a health guarantee?
