Then what? The best protection is to buy from a reputable breeder, and do your homework on the breeder and his/her dogs and their detailed health records. Meet the parents and grandparents and siblings of the pup. Check the pedigree back 5 or 6 generations for inbreeding. Talk to lots of others who have purchased from the breeder.
A health guarantee gives you peace of mind, until you need to use it. I guess a guarantee is better than no guarantee, all else being equal, but a guarantee really doesn't mean much. Like others said, there are so many congenital health issues that could develop later in life.
Best bet is to do your homework on the breeder, don't rely on a guarantee.
