My husband used to yell at our dog Ernie when he ran off and it always seemed odd because why would the dog come to you when your mad and yelling...anyway, more to the point, when they run off you want to have a ton of fun where you are because you want them to come back, if you have to fall to the ground playing then fall to the ground playing. At puppy class the trainer told us to make it as exciting as possible to be by your side....they won't want to leave....Also, I find baby gates useful, I have a bunch anyway because I have a 2 year old and I use them for the dogs as well. You can probable put one up on the outside of your front door...might not look that great unless you get one to blend in but at least they can't run out in the street when you open the door....
