Default Stopped sleeping through the night

So Rudy has often slept from 9:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. without any issues. He sleeps in a crate and has done really well. My question is all of a sudden he has started waking up one or two times a night and I am wondering if I should let him whine for a while prior to jumping up to let him out? I am certain he can make it through the night because he has done it often. But does he wake up and really have to go or is he just having trouble going back to sleep? Any thoughts?
