Question From pee pad to potty trained... HELP

So choco has been trained to go pee and poop on pee pads ever since i got him (8 weeks old) and his original owner also used pee pads.
but now that he is a year and 2 months old i thought he should be trained to go potty outside and get rid of the pee pads.

when is a good time to start?
how old will he need to be to be able to hold and not go do his business?
and how long will he be able to hold it for?

how would i start it??
would i just get rid of the pee pad?

i know that when i took him to a friends house for a couple of days to stay,
i had to close him up in the bathroom (cus my friend also had a dog, but he didnt like choco too much cus he got jealous). i left a pee pad for him as usual with food and water on the opposite sides of the bathroom. but he never used the pee pad and he never did his business in the bathroom.
he yelped when he needed to go, and so i took him outside... but he wont do that at home cus hes so used to it (and probably because hes comfortable at home?)

i just really dont kno where to start or how to start.
thank you guys so much,
i always look to yorkietalk for advice
