A vet told me once to lay it out flat like on a plate or cookie sheet. If it's not all mounded up they have to work a little bit harder to get the food. I also free feed but don't have other dogs in the house. I've heard some dogs live to eat and others eat to live. The ones that live to eat you can't really free feed obviously. As far as the amounts go I can't really say but I'd think that 1/2 cup split up 4x throughout the day doesn't seem like much for a puppy who's pretty active. I'm sure someone will know better then me on that one.
