My OTis is a runner, if he gets through a door, he forgets his name and every command he's been taught. I have an ex-pen in front of the door. I agree, if you can get his attention and go in the opposite direction, he'll probably follow you. Otis is 5 and he's probably gotten away from me 4 times in his life. Every time is terrifying.
