Weight really has nothing to do with him"holding it". Little dogs can hold it just as long as big dogs, it's age that matters, and at 3, he should be able to hold it. My 11 mos old 2 3/4 lbs pup, goes to the bathroom less than my 4 mo old 3 1/2 lb and actually the little one goes less than my 14 lb yorkie. If she is doing it at night, I can only suggest 2 things(either confine her to an xpen or just don't worry about the carpet or flooring, as it's not the dogs fault. Mine are all trained(except the 4 mo old, which she's in an xpen at night)during the day to use the pads, and at night, the carpet turns in to a giant pee pad. I will pull it up one day, for now, I just keep cleaning it. I never scold them, as I said, it's not their fault, it's mine!
