I have a boy that has a topknot and does get mistaken for a girl, but it doesn't seem to bother him. LOL But I did start getting him bows that are more "manly" like the ones with the little firehydrants in the middle, lol
You could always just pull his hair back flat and use a manly type clip to hold it down flat on his head, no pony tail.
