I've never been a crate trainer, only xpen, and that's only to sleep in and when we go away for a little bit. Other than that, just like the new one we just got, she's allowed out here with us, and if I catch her peeing or pooping where it's not acceptable, I pick her up, put her nose down by it(this is what has worked for me for years) tell her NO and take her to the pee pad and tell her you potty on the pad. When I do catch her going where she's supposed too, I give lots of praises. Some people will say this is wrong, and it will make them afriad of you. In years, I've never had one dog afraid of me. Hopefully you will get the pup back on track. Mine are not allowed all through the house, to me, that's wrong, they don't need to be in the bedrooms or the living room. They have a huge family room, where we're usually with them all day, the kitchen and laundry room, this way they don't get a chance to pee on the newer carpet. Good luck and sorry to hear about the family emergency
