kennel or close friend with small dog experience YT if small, like mine (1.6Kgs & 3.2Kgs) can be a bit demanding/fragile. Burdening someone with the care who is not very familiar with them is a tall order. A kennel for a few days should not be a big deal. Maybe, safer, barring kennel cough etc..., in since should be experienced at handling animals. However, if u have a friend with a small dog friendly environment, including #1 incidents, such as their own small dog, then that should be safe too and much nicer stay for your companion. In general, would take kennel over home with small children e.g. < = 6yrs, of course if household has similar dogs then much less of a risk since kids more aware of delicateness as well as parents(supervision).
Coincidentally, I now live in Tokyo and have similar situation planning a trip to U.S. for 1-2weeks. Would like to bring the dogs, but a lot of admin required. We moved from Bangkok recently and cleared Japan customs in 30mins, but coordinated in advance(40days appointment), then faxed all paper-work, called/discussed status etc... For your 3 day trip, bringing dog would be a lot of effort and restrict your excursion options.
As others have noted, we left a worn shirt, for smell/comfort, behind when we had to leave one of our boyz at Vet for week(twice), much like a kennel, except the extra torture of daily needles and other screeming pets. Scooby a picky light eater at home, found his appetite b4 long at Vet when clear our hand feeding not available.
Enjoy your trip.
