Wow.... that's very similar to what my daughter's dentist told me when she was very little. When she went for her first checkup/cleaning when she was about 3, he told me that she had very little enamel on some of her teeth and that it could have been caused by some virus/illness I may have had during the pregancy right at the time when she would have been growing her teeth. It also could be hereditary - I had pretty weak enamel as a kid too. I don't know what you do for a dog in this case but they ended up putting silver crowns on about 5 of her teeth (mostly molars) instead of dealing with decay issues that she would have been prone to have.
I do sympathize with dog teeth issues though. My toy poodle (RIP) would never eat dry dog food so he was given canned his whole life and this caused some serious teeth issues in his later years. He had quite a few pulled before his passing. In fact, I think when he died, he maybe had 6 teeth left. I'm much more diligent about Tatum's teeth now.
