Wow, what a horrible thing that was for both that poor baby who was killed and also for his owners to helplessly watch him being killed. It's kind of like being between a rock and a hard place- the coyotes just being coyotes in their own natural habitat and your beloved pet being able to go in his yard.
Myself, I think that I would have first researched the area more as to get an idea of this kind of thing before even having a pet there and then I would research other more effective and humane ways to keep the coyotes at least out of my yard.
And, as a last resort, I think I would be tempted to use more forceful means of protecting my beloved pets and family members. But, only under extreme circumstances as I am an animal lover and do believe all animals have a right to their existence/environment. But, we also as humans have rights too for ourselves and our pets. It's sometimes a precarious balance to maintain.
