Question Furniture

All-

My partner and I just rescued the most wonderful Yorkie from a Yorkie rescue group on Saturday. Thus far, the little guy has proved to be just about perfect...quiet, warm, respectful...except that he's expressed the occasional preference to hang out on our upholstered chairs and sofa instead of his dog bed. In general, we're trying to train him to stay off the furniture (it's all pretty new), but the sticking point is that sometimes we want him up on the furniture when we're comfortable with it, i.e. when we're on the couch and want to snuggle/are there to supervise. How do you train a dog to stay off the furniture unless he's invited up? Anyone?
