We always keep enough $$ in our savings/checking to deal with any emergency - pet or otherwise. Recently, we *finally* did our wills and all of that - and we set up a Pet Trust if something happens to both of us - so no one will ever have to think twice about getting them vet care if we are gone.
I think it's a great idea to set money aside for pets - like their own little insurance plan if you don't have pet insurance.
