It's my personal opinion that dogs hump because it feels good, though they are less likely to hump someone they consider a higher ranking pack member. If it's a toy, it's not a dominance thing any more than it is for little kids who do shall we say, similar things. I think this is why dogs may stop humping after being neutered and then start up again. At first, it's being driven by testosterone and horniness, and then the dog discovers, hey, this still feels pretty good!

I don't think there's any harm in letting them hump toys, though maybe you want to put them away when you have company! I will admit that Thor doesn't hump, so it's easy for me to give advice. He does sometimes give his equipment an extended tongue bath, though.
