I understand why you feel responsible...but you have to remember she had the ultimate responsiblity of keeping them seperated. This isn't necessarily related to the bred...the dog had puppies. They will attack other dogs in the presence of their puppies.
It's likely her chi died from shock. I'm sure your friend feels horrible guilt herself.
Personally I would not get her another...until she's ready. I'd apologize...and let her know when the time comes...you'd like to get her one.
