I agree that this is not a phase. My Rocky was the same way with me and I got him at 6 years old . What did help is I would give him a ton of attention first thing in the morning. Then he would be more ok with wandering off with daddy or playing with copper in the next room. He still would look for me if I was out of the room for more than a couple min. I didn't really mind it, actually my mornings are still very sad for me because we had our own special routine and I really miss it.
