Ours was pretty much pad trained when we brought her home from her breeder...she's had just a very few accidents and generally those were during our play with her. I don't know if this is just her or if it's a Yorkie thing but she will not pee and poop on the same pad. If there is even a drop of pee on the pad, she will not poop on it. She will, however, go back to it to pee. Therefore, two pads are kept down and the relative size of them does not seem to bother her. (The irregular ones we use now are about the size of a placemat.)
By the way, we have used the washable, reusable ones from the get go because it's how she learned. Our breeder warned us that she would consider the disposable ones as toys because of the rustle/crinkle sound. By the way, she was housebroken by imitating her mother during those critical weeks she was role modeling for her puppies. Neither our breeder nor we have ever purposely tried to housebreak her.
If I could just get her internal time clock adjusted to a new time zone, we'd be set. Naturally she came from a zone hour ahead of us. It's amazing how much an hour difference can mean in the wee hours of the morning. For her safety I crate her at night and she has never soiled her crate. She just whimpers when she needs out to do her business at 4 a.m.
