I use a detangler spray between baths by Paul Mitchell. It smells great! You could use a spray if you want. I don't think its hurts! Also try to maybe just wipe the paws with a baby wipe, that could help a lot. That way you don't have to keep getting him wet. The smell does go away after a little bit, but I know what you mean. Search Threads for some sprays, you could even order one online. They are good for daily grooming too, not just the odor.
