Isoflurane or Sevoflurane (both gases) should be used to maintain anesthesia. They have to be intubated, so usually an injection of a sedative is given before the gas is hooked up or Propofol could be given before Iso or Sevo in an IV.
An IV should be placed before surgery so the vet has a line in in case of an emergency and it is good to give fluids anyway.
Surgery should be done on a heated surface.
Preop blood work should be done (blood panel and CBC).
A bile acids test, urinalysis and EKG are never a bad idea.
