Default Another potty training question

So Max has mastered going potty outside when he is coming out of his crate after being in there for a while (mornings, and at lunchtime, and we've been using the if he doesn't go outside he goes in his crate and then try again method) and he usually potties outside around 4x a day.

My question is how can we teach him to let us know when he has to go outside so that we don't have to keep crating him. The only time he has accidents now, is when we're playing, and he goes to get a drink, and then pees on the carpet. He caught on to the going outside part really quickly, but I want to help him out with learning to tell us when he has to go out!
