I did this as well! If you feel more comfortable with your regular vet, see if he participates in Friends of Animals. I was able to get the neuter for free (for me, it did not include cost of pre-op bloodwork, teeth extractions, e-collar,etc.) with purchase of the certificate. It drastically reduces the cost!
