I do both for Sully (7 mos). I live in New England and winters here are a too cold for even me to go out. A couple of times we had days when the wind chill factor was -20 below and taking him out on those days is not an option.

During the day he's confined to the kitchen with baby gates up. I take him out before I leave for work for poop time and when I come home for lunch break there's usually a couple of drops of pee (I think more of a marking pee) on the wee wee pads. When I get home from work at 5p he goes outside again and then once more before we go to bed. I also leave a wee pad in his xpen at night just incase, but he hasn't used that in about 2 weeks. The older he's getting the longer he's able to hold it.

He won't go out in the rain, so I need them for those days - He thinks he's made out of sugar so he might melt.

I mainly keep them out, just incase he gets that "gotta go" feeling and it's less stressful than worrying 24/7 about my floors/carpets. I'm a clean freak-a-holic.
