Oliver has always gotten along well w/ the cats he's encountered, whether on their territory or his. (One exception, when a "host" cat took offense and corner O behind the toilet in her family's powder room!)
Once I asked our vet about getting a cat and the effect of that on Oliver. This was probably when O was about 5. Vet predicted that it could work out really well if we got a young kitten. That way, he said, Oliver could help raise the kitten.
We never got the kitten, for a variety of reasons, but our vet's advice has always been A #1 ... so under other circs I'd be willing to go for it.
