Male/female would definitely be your best bet!

I've lived with female/female pairs twice before, and they would usually just tolerate each other. One day they'd be best friends, the next they would hate each other. They never fully 100% got along. That's not ALWAYS the case but I think your safest bet is male/female. It's usually almost guaranteed they will get along even if takes a little bit of warming up. Again, every case is different. But, Jackson is my first male and I love his attitude, personality and temperament better than any of the female dogs I've had in the past (non-yorkie!) Male/male combos always seem to get along better too. And I don't know one male dog personally who marks inside the house!
