I know how horrible that must have been for you. I came home one day to find that before my dh had left for work he had opened the kitchen window and the wind must have blown the heartworm pills down off of the shelf we keep them on way up above the sink just to be safe. My golden retriever who loves to chew everything chewed a whole package of them. Luckily it was only the pills for my Cookie's pills who weighs 3 pounds. The vet said that there would be no effect on her because she weighs over 50 pounds but it was a terrible scare. I had no idea which one she had at first or how long it had been. We moved the medicine so this never happens again.
