I would not recommend a kill shelter in these economic times. I'm sure you'll be able to find a good home for this baby.   
Also, there is always the option to re-home him without a price, if it comes to that - that would be far better than giving him over to a shelter, and it'd be in the best interest of the dog. Plus, you'd know where he ended up and could know that he had a good home.
