There's no right or wrong way. You try each method. I've shaped the outside of checkbook cover to the shape of the inside of the ear. Covered it with surgical adhesive, placed a match from a match book (cutting off the sulpher part) centered the match onto the adhesive and placed inside the ear. I've used self stick gauze and folded the ear like you have, done the masking tape and even used breathe right strips and glued the ears together with surgical adhesive.......You just have to try different things, what works on one, may not work on another. Some are more stubborn than others, boys seem to be more troublesome....the testicle thing and their ability to pull them up at will until seated. So many things going on that take so much calcium.
