I had the same concerns as you do - and now I have a full time job and yorkie!! It works just fine for us. We keep Bailey in an expen (exercise pen) during the day so that she won't get into things around the house and get hurt.
I leave between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.; hubby gets home between 3:30 and 4:00 - after the potty training stages, Bailey held her pee all day.
