I have never seen any pet insurance for $400 a month! Maybe $400 a year. Most don't cost over $25 a month and can be a life saver for people not prepared for catastrophic health care costs for their pet. I have seen it advertised for $135 a year.

I advise anyone that does not have a good sized savings account, to get Pet Insurance. That way a poor dog does not have to be put to sleep because the owner cannot afford a $5,000-$10,000 life-saving surgery. There are still deductibles with insurance. You may have to pay $50 for a visit, but it is the emergency situations you are really insuring. You may only have to pay 10% of a large surgery bill and most have caps so you would never have to pay over a certain deductible no matter how high the bill goes.

I think it is better to have the money in the bank set aside in case of emergency. But that is not always possible, so insurance fills the gap.
