I have Stedman (my boy) in a shorter cut because he wears a belly band at all times, so it is much easier for me if his hair is kept shorter. I actually think he prefers this too, although he does have a gorgeous coat when it is long.
My little girl Tatum just had LP surgery a couple of weeks ago so right now her haircut looks kinda goofy because they had to shave half of all her hair off. Once her 6 and 1/2 week recovery period is over though, I plan to shave her down and make her hair even all over, then I will be letting it grow back out. I had planned on doing this anyway (letting her hair grow long again) but of course when she had her surgery they had to shave half of it off, so it has slowed down the growing process alot. It'll get there though
