I think this thread is a classic example of "it's not what you say, but how you say it." Saying that people who listed do's and dont's seem ungrateful, or that hint threads annoy the heck out of you, is naturally going to make the people who have done these things feel defensive, and less open to hearing how perhaps the GE could be improved.
