Remy is 8 months and had his first grooming appointment about 2 weeks ago. I struggled with the same issues and actually ended up just getting a "sanitary" groom - ie - cleaned up the hair between his pads, his little private areas, checked his ears (no work necessary), and trimmed the hair around his eyes (only a few that were getting into his eyes). Aside from that he did not have anything else trimmed. For the first experience it was perfect. I was able to stay with him the entire time, and the only thing he really reacted to was the dryer - she could not use it around his face so his hair on his head air-dryed.
