Once the food is ground up they will be able to eat it just fine. They mainly just lick it. I am not a fan of Science Diet dog food because I feel it is not a quality food. It has too much corn in it. Solid Gold Wee Bits is a good food also. The most important thing is to grind the dry food until it is really fine.

Here is a good website that has reviews on the different types of dog foods. I prefer the 5 star foods. I feel that some of the 6 star food are too high in protein.

As for the nail question, I forgot to answer. It is important to start cutting their nails. The momma will greater appreciate it.

Just take little fingernail clippers and clip off the little sharp pointed ends. You can cut back to where the nail is just starting to curve down.
