Your main goal in taking care of his teeth at this age is to get him use to the act of tooth brushing. You don't have to be that through, he will lose these teeth anyway, but getting him use to you working in his mouth is important. I recently purchased one of the fingertip brushes that you place over your index finger, and I really like it, I think it gives you more control. You can also use a child's soft toothbrush. I would make these early sessions easily going and short, around 6 months of age, he'll start getting permanent teeth, and these are the teeth that will need brushing. Dogs don't really get cavities like humans do, their weakness is tartar, which can lead to gum inflammation and tooth loss. He'll probably go through a bad breath period, and this is due to losing the baby teeth, and the blood will give mouth a fishy smell. Sometimes double rows of teeth can cause bad breath because food can gathers between the teeth, if they don't lose baby teeth on their own, most people have them pulled when they have a spay or neuter.
By the way, I'm glad you got a dog toothpaste, human toothpaste uses artificial sweeteners that can poison your dog.
