What is more important to you? It was very important to me that I not have another marker in the house. I have had male dogs all my life and the two I have now (besides Max) mark up a storm. SO I had Max neutered before he learned to lift his leg. I have never trained on pads tho..so I have no idea if that changes things for you at all...
