I think it is an excellent idea. We once thought our dachshund, Kate, was on her last leg, she was old and rarely left her bed. Once we got another dog, she seemed to revive and act like a youngster again. She is 16 now and still has moments when she plays with my little male yorkie, Ben. That made us realize how important another dog is to them. I think dogs need companionship other than people if possible. It doesn't always work out, but if things are looking good -- I say go for it!
Oh -- it was not instant love though. Each time we have gotten a new dog, Kate gave them a month of cold shoulder, then it was like she all of a sudden decided they were part of the family. She is sort of the matriarch. She puts up with the playful antics of the younger ones, but there is never any doubt that she is still in charge.
