When my Uncle had to put his ederly poodle to sleep the Vet had him bring the other dog with him. After Eve was gone they brought Pearl into the room. She sniffed Eve and walked away. She new she was gone. The Vet felt this was very important for Pearl otherwise she would always be looking for Eve, but they can tell when they are no longer there by smell.I am sorry
