So sorry for what you are going through. I put my had to put my 2 yorkies to sleep within weeks of each other so i may be able to offer some insight on 2 questions. My female had to be put to sleep first due to sudden heart issues. Our remaining yorkie was 17 and we knew he would have issues with her gone. I made a huge mistake having my carpet cleaned within 2 weeks of her passing. Losing her scent was devastating to him. Leave things around that contain their scent.

Second, while it may be hard, I cant express the importance for your pets to be with them as they slowly drift off to sleep. You be with them for them, not for you. The process is peaceful, especially if they have a pre-relaxing shot in which you can spend some time with them as they are sleepy. The euthanasia takes only about 30 seconds. I feel so much better knowing I was with them until the end, even though it was hard for me. Leaving them without being there is just as hard, so think about what would be most comforting to them. I put my collie to sleep without being there. I always regretted it.
